What is a BUG?
Bicycle User Groups (BUGs) are simply a group of cyclists who encourage the provision of cycling facilities in their local area. A BUG works closely with local government to improve safety and convenience when cycling to work, school, the shops or just for leisure and fitness. They are the most effective way of improving bicycle facilities in your area.
In 1998 Bikewest has compiled a manual with advise for BUGS.
Through a BUG you can help improve cycling conditions by ;
- identifying locations for bicycle parking rails
- surveying potential bicycle routes
- reporting hazards on roads and paths
- highlight the benefits to the local community from improved cycling facilities
- writing letters of thanks when Council does something good.
One idea is to take a local council staff member for a ride so that they can experience cycling first hand.
Here is a list of current BUGs. If you can’t find one that suits your needs, you can always start your own. Contact the BTA for details on ‘how to’ do this. Also – if any of the details below are wrong, please send the correction to us ans we will fix it. Thanks!
