Tired driver jailed for killing cyclist

A tired driver who hit and killed a woman cyclist has been jailed for four years and three months in country Victoria.

Eamonn Leddin, 21, of Warrnambool, was sentenced on March 13 in the Warrnambool County Court after he pleaded guilty to culpable driving causing the death of Janet Baldam, 47, a mother of four.

Leddin will have a serve a minimum of two years and three months before he is eligible for parole, the Warrnambool Standard reported.

The court had been told in evidence earlier that the night before the incident, Leddin had between three-and-a-half to five-and-a-half hours’ sleep after going to a show in Melbourne.

Passenger Jessica Cherrett had testified that Ms Baldham was clearly visible for 1000 metres and was wearing a pink top.  Leddin had a number of times not seemed to notice objects or vehicles.

When interviewed by police, Mr Leddin said it appeared he’d gone into a subconscious state and later said he only noticed the cyclist when he heard Ms Cherrett scream.
