Active transport could save many lives

Always a good sign when economists embrace the benefits of active transport.  Associate Professor Cameron Gordon of the University of Canberra suggests these measures to create a more positive transport environment:

–          Design public spaces to encourage walking

–          Traffic calming to create attractive spaces

–          Road pricing (congestion pricing) and increasing parking fees

–          Expansion of bike-share schemes

He concludes that a broader incorporation of the human body into transport design and planning could save millions of lives. The impact of obesity on life expectancy is examined in an article by Helen Walls from the Australian National University.
