Cycling increases 177% with protected bike lanes

For those who follow the ascent of Jeannette Sadik-Khan the goals for New York city sound all too familiar: Design for safety, design for ALL road users, design great public spaces.

We have been seeing the results emerging over the last few years, and this report emphasizes how good engineering will make streets safer, but it comes at a cost. This is why we need to get substantial sums of money into cycling in WA.

Averaging injury reduction of close to 50% on the “complete streets” with fully protected bicycle lanes whilst increasing retail spending in these streets by the same percentage sound like a dream. And the attraction of safe bicycle infrastructure is confirmed by bicycle volumes increasing up to 177% on streets with fully protected bike lanes (we have noticed an increase of between 20% and 61% in Perth simply by extending safe infrastructure by a couple of km)
