Gear Up Day, this Wednesday 21st March, will give Perth cyclists an extra incentive to register for the Sunsuper Ride To Conquer Cancer, supporting the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research (WAIMR).

Participants who have already registered for the ride will be asked to encourage a friend or colleague to come along on the adventure of a lifetime. For each registration, riders will have the chance to win a Norco road bike, worth almost $1,000.

“Thank you to all of those who have registered so far. We have lots more work to do on cancer and we encourage everyone to join us for the Ride and raise valuable dollars for research,” said Professor Peter Klinken, Director of the Western Australian Institute of Medical Research (WAIMR).

“Gear up day, on Wednesday is the perfect time to register somebody you know to take part in The Ride to Conquer Cancer ,” he said. “I’m riding and I’d like to see many others enjoying this challenge on October 20 and 21 this year. You’ve still got plenty of time to train for the event.”

Thousands of West Australians are expected to unite for the Ride to Conquer Cancer, cycling 200 kilometres in two days to raise money for cancer research, treatment and care. Registered participants must raise at least $2,500 to take part in the ride which begins with an Opening Ceremony on the Saturday morning and finishes on the Sunday. Riders will be supported by hundreds of volunteers and crew members, providing meals, water and snack stops, gear transport, portable restrooms, safety on the course, comprehensive medical services and an overnight campsite complete with tents, hot showers and entertainment.

One of the largest teams taking part in the event is Team MACA. Staff at Mining and Civil Australia recently enjoyed a Ride to Conquer Cancer orientation providing them with full details about the ride and free tee-shirts. MACA is proud to be the Ride’s “Powered By” sponsor.

With one in two Australians developing cancer in their lifetime, the Ride to Conquer Cancer has become a powerful call to action for cancer patients, survivors and their supporters.

Last year, The Ride in Brisbane helped raise $4.7 million which went towards cancer research projects at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. Ride dollars are currently being used to fund the largest ever skin cancer study in Australia to find ways of determining a person’s risk of developing melanoma, as well as pinpointing women’s responses to chemotherapy for ovarian cancer.

This year, four separate Rides, each over 200km, will take participants of all ages and abilities through picturesque parts of Western Australia (starting in Perth and heading south), Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. It will bring together communities of survivors, riders and supporters for one common goal: to conquer cancer.

About the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research
WAIMR is dedicated to improving the health of the community it serves – across the state, nation and globe. Its research aims to uncover the genetic and environmental causes of a range of diseases. The ultimate goal is to prevent disease developing and to create improved treatments if these conditions do emerge. The WAIMR team has identified numerous genes associated with diseases such as leukaemia, diabetes, cancer (especially breast, ovarian, melanoma and prostate), as well as those contributing to a number of nerve, muscle and mental health disorders and also studies the impact of environmental factors on diseases.
