The Australian National Cycling Strategy 2011 to 2016 has been released. Amongst others it is signed off by the WA Minister for Transport, Simon O’Brien, and the Minister for Police, Rob Johnson. The overarching vision is to double the number of people cycling in the next five years. The number one priority is promotion, the number two is infrastructure and facilities to “create a comprehensive and continous network of safe and attractive routes to cycle”.
The report suggests that shifting 5% of car trips to bicycles could reduce carbon impacts by up to 8%. Using ABS data the report shows a slight decline in bicycle commuting between 2006 to 2009 (1.6% to 1.5%).
