In a letter to the Greens (my favorite colour) MLC Giz Watson (Letter Simon O’Brien) the Minister for Transport, Simon O’Brien, outlines the current progress and funding in regards to the PSP to Fremantle. Looks like progress beyond Grant Street Station is in the hands of the gods.
PSP to Fremantle
Published: September 8, 2010
Thanks, Giz, for asking all the right questions (even though we might not like the answers).
If people using bicycles to commute to work or for pleasure need to use the road for the foreseeable future, we need to think how we can make this road usage safe for vulnerable road users. The towards Zero strategy is based on the physical limits a human body can cope with in case of an “accident”. It is clearly shown that where unprotected road users are exposed to cars the safe speed is 30 kmh. At that speed 85% of people will not suffer permanent injuries when hit by a car.
If we are unable to provide a PSP to Fremantle the speed on the road that cyclists use should be 30 kmh.
Regards,
Heinrich Benz
The letter indicates:
Funding beyond 2010-11 financial year for the construction of PSPs has not been determined.
Why can’t the current state government forecast expenditure futher than the current financial year, surely there must be a plan to cater for population growth and increase in number of cyclists using the PSP? Come on Minister of Transport, sign off on the draft updated Perth Bicycle Network Plan so that appriopriate funding can be allocated to address all holes in the PBN. How long have you had the draft document?
